FOOD IS MEMORIES
As the July 4th week approaches, I thought I would share a family-favorite that always reminds me of summer and BBQs at home – my mom’s BBQ Sauce.
My mom made this all the time. I have no idea where it came from (I never asked; it just came with being a Vollmar). My mom was born and raised in the country outside of Houston, so I expect it comes from her upbringing there. My mom has been gone for over 22 years, and she would never have imagined me sharing her cooking on social media! Its my way of keeping her memory alive.
As with all of my mom’s “cooking,” it’s simple, not complicated, but the flavor is great and takes me back. I’ll be serving this sauce on BBQ chicken this week for our Meal Exchange. Nothing I create and share is proprietary. I just like to know folks are enjoying great food with family and friends.
Jot this down and add it to your repertoire; you’ll be glad you did!
6 ounces butter
2 cups ketchup
1/4 cup chili powder, or more to taste
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or more to taste
2 tablespoons garlic powder
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
• In a saucepan, melt the butter. Add and whisk together the ketchup, chili powder, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, and vinegar. Let simmer for 10 minutes.
• Season to taste with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Adjust spice to taste.
Makes approximately 3 cups
